Whatever is exactly meant by “globalisation” it requires a transformation of research approaches in the social sciences and humanities (SSH) that reflect the increase internationalisation and interdependence of social science research phenomena. SSH research in terms of both research agendas and research infrastructures need to catch up with a globalising world. From a European perspective, this is especially pertinent in regions like the New Independent States of the former Soviet Union (NIS) and China, with whom international research collaborations so far hardly exist. For this to change there has to occur a significant increase in the collaborative generation of knowledge. Social science and humanities scholars from these geographical areas need to be involved more actively in joint research efforts.
The need to promote scientific co-operation between the EU and other countries has been widely recognised and a number of important initiatives in this direction were taken on the EU level. Global SSH Action intends to build on and expand
these activities.
