Workshop "Mapping the social sciences and humanities in the CIS countries and China"

The main focus of the Global SSH workshop “Mapping the social sciences and humanities in the CIS countries and China” held in Tartu, Estonia, on 6 – 8 June 2007, was on the activities implemented within the project workpackage 2 “Mapping the Social sciences and humanities (SSH) in the CIS countries and China”. The workpackage 2 objectives include (1) mapping and assessing the scientific capability in six targeted CIS countries – Russia, Ukraine, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan; and China and (2) elaboration of recommendations for the development of compatible methods of assessment of SSH scientific capabilities in the international context. To achieve these objectives, the project participants have collected basic information about the SSH general standing, institutions and policies of SSH research in the mentioned countries. This information is being compiled in two project reports – the Databook on the SSH macroenvironment and Report on SSH institutional landscape and research policies. Preparation of the reports, including some preliminary results, has been discussed at the workshop. In addition to the GlobalSSH Action activities discussions, invited experts presented progress and results of their studies in mapping and assessing the SSH scientific capacities in Europe and third countries.
